Fabulous Farm

fabulousfarmshops

During the last few years, traveling through the United Kingdom and visiting farm shops professionally, I’ve spent many frustrating hours pulling my hair out frantically trying to locate the many farm shops I planned to visit. While many are huge and spread over two floors like miniature department stores, others are situated on motorways disguised as service stations. Some are cute, quaint, old-fashioned, and off the beaten track, and I’d stumbled upon them just by sheer luck! Unfortunately, having spent the previous weeks plotting my routes, these lovely farm shops were nowhere to be found during my searches and left me wondering, “how does their customer find them?”

Ben’s Farm Shop

Ben's Farm Shop

The Watson family has been farming the 350-hectare River farm for over sixty years, more than thirty years of which have been spent bringing back the taste and quality of fresh, traditional food. They’ve done this through their farm shops, butcher counters, fresh vegetables, grocery, deli counters, organic veg boxes, and dairy. All these are separate businesses but share one thing in common; they believe in high-quality, unaltered, fresh food and good agriculture. Until recently, the name was also the same, but they’ve recently changed the name to Ben’s Farm Shops because they wanted something more straightforward, easier to remember, and more modern.

Above all else, the Association has allowed them to build strong relationships with others across the country. They share drinks, discuss their successes and troubles, emulate each other’s successes and try to avoid each other’s failures. As a result, they have developed networks of friends around the country where they can chat.

Great Food Club

Great Food Club

Great Food Club shines an eye on and celebrates East Midland’s best food & drink independents – restaurants, pubs, producers, and shops in their online guide receive their place on merit, not because they pay them a fee. Their criteria to include businesses in their guide consist of one question: Would they recommend this independent food & drink business to a discarding friend? If the answer were yes, they’d add them free of cost. First, they don’t write about their negative experiences because they want to protect businesses. Secondly, their time is limited, so they want to spend time writing about the many excellent independent companies out there!

OAKES FARM SHOP

OAKES FARM SHOP

The 12-year dream became a reality for the Oake family by opening the 525 m2 Balsall Common farm store, among the most significant new build shops in the UK. From humble beginnings, Gary and his wife, Jayne, were determined to create an outlet for local producers to promote the quality of their products. This “field to fork” mentality runs through the heart to the new venture, and Gary spoke passionately about his quest to support local rural businesses. “I am a farmer, so I aim to support small local businesses by allowing them to promote their products. their lamb is reared on their land, Fowlers of Earlswood supply the cheese, and Andrew Davies’ bakery bakes their bread in Kenilworth…even their coffee machines have been bought from a Balsall common business.”
