The British Association of Pediatric Surgeons (BAPS) was founded in 1953, aiming to improve pediatric surgery standards. As Dr. D Innes Williams wrote in the Journal of Paediatrics in 2003, “Paediatric surgeons had been appointed to children’s hospitals since the 1850s, but it was not until the 1950s that there were sufficient specialists to form an association.” Before the NHS came into being, surgeons who worked in children’s hospitals had depended on charitable donations; they were honorary posts without any salary attached. However, once the NHS was born, these surgeons could finally focus on caring for babies and toddlers with problems such as cleft palates and club feet.
