The Lipscombes’ love affair with fish & chippers began way back in the 1920s when Harold Lipscomb, a miner, and his wife painstakingly saved all the cash he made playing cricket for Accrington – a highly regarded team. They had the money supporters gave them generously if they played well. Luckily Harold was an outstanding cricketer, and they could save enough to move to Romford, near London, and buy their first fish and chip shop in 1923. Horace and Celias Cooney bought the fish & chips shopped in Aldeburgh from Mr. Cooper in 1967; they were taught how to fry in beef drippings. Their son Peter was eleven years old. Trade increased, causing the shop to get larger and living accommodations to become smaller. They started with a two-pan range and have since upgraded to a four, five, and six-pan capacity. Eventually, the only way they could expand was to get another store. So in 1997, they opened The Golden Galleon.
